Dental Implants in Turkey vs the UK: What’s the Real Difference?

A direct comparison of dental implants in Turkey vs the UK shows unique benefits to both approaches. If your treatment is available under the NHS, it can provide the best combination of cost and convenience for clinically necessary cases.

The choice between private care in the UK and Turkey depends on the scale of treatment and how important local aftercare is. For multiple-tooth restorations, Turkey offers major price benefits, while for more limited treatments, private UK care has a better balance of advantages.

The Real Cost: Travel and Extra Fees

However, the raw implant and prosthesis costs are only part of the total you will need to spend to replace your teeth, whether in the UK or in Turkey. Diagnostics and consultations, tooth extractions and bone grafts, and travel expenses all add to the real cost of placing implants.

Flights

If you choose to get implants in Turkey, your first major expense as a UK patient will be your flights. Flight prices depend on your departure and destination, as well as traffic volume, which largely depends on the season. Istanbul and Antalya are the most famous cities for dental tourism. Since implant treatments are often divided into two major stages separated by several months, you will need to visit Turkey twice.

For example, your treatment may start in winter and conclude in summer. You might opt for two round-trip economy flights, each including a week-long stay.

Travelling from London, your Istanbul flight might cost £255-£464 (Pegasus, Turkish Airlines) in December, and £269-£397 (LOT, British Airways) in June. Getting to Antalya can cost £242-£340 (easyJet, AJet) in December and £361-£528 (Pegasus, Wizz Air) in June.

Flights from Manchester to Istanbul may cost £224-£592 (Pegasus, Turkish Airlines) in December and £337-£542 (Pegasus, KLM) in June; travel to Antalya can be £240-£603 (Jet2, Lufthansa) in December and £434-£552 (Pegasus, easyJet) in June.

Liverpool-Istanbul flights can cost £224-£445 (Pegasus, KLM) in December and £337-£489 (Pegasus, Lufthansa) in June; Liverpool-Antalya: £240-£330 (Jet2, Pegasus) in December and £434-£472 (Pegasus, SunExpress) in June.

Edinburgh-Istanbul flights may be £399-£435 (Pegasus, KLM) in December and £327-£505 (Pegasus, Air France) in June; Edinburgh-Antalya: £505-£631 (Pegasus, Turkish Airlines) in December and £506-£658 (Pegasus, Jet2) in June.

Cardiff-Istanbul flights can cost £307-£378 (KLM, British Airways) in December and £355-£394 (British Airways, KLM) in June; Cardiff-Antalya: £527-£655 (Lufthansa, Turkish Airlines) in December and £566-£664 (easyJet, Turkish Airlines) in June.

Accommodation

You can usually complete each major stage of your implant treatment in Turkey in a one-week trip. Accommodation costs vary by destination: in Istanbul, expect to pay £92-£300 in December and £150-£400 in June. A similar stay in Antalya can cost £140-£350 in December and £180-£500 in June.

To simplify treatment planning, clinics can include accommodation in their treatment packages, particularly for full-arch and full-mouth treatments.

Transfers and transportation

Travel within a city also adds to treatment expenses. After arriving at the airport, you will need to get to the clinic. A taxi transfer from Istanbul Airport can cost you £30-£38. In Antalya, airport transfer costs £13-£20. You are also responsible for tolls incurred during the trip.

Food and daily expenses

In Istanbul, you can expect to spend £22.50-£38.00 on dining per day. In Antalya, daily dining can cost £24-£40 for an average tourist.

Additional dental procedures

Diagnostics and consultations in UK dental clinics usually cost £65–£250. However, Turkish clinics usually include them for free for international patients.

Implant placement often requires extra procedures, such as extractions and bone grafting. Private UK clinics can charge £200-£300 for extractions. Clinics in Turkey usually charge £50-£75 for simple extractions and up to £100 for complex cases. Wisdom tooth extractions can cost more.

If you need a bone graft before placing implants, in the UK it may add £250-£1,000+ to the total treatment price, whereas in Turkey a graft for one quadrant can start at £80, with a more typical average price of £200.

Another treatment you may require when placing implants in the upper jaw is a sinus lift. In the UK, sinus lifts can cost £80 to £2,500, while in Turkey you can expect to spend £25 to £500.

Other expenses

Other expenses to consider when getting a dental implant treatment in Turkey include travel insurance, currency exchange fees, entertainment during your stay, and similar.

The real cost example

With these expenses in mind, let’s look at how the total treatment costs can differ between the UK and Turkey in two cases.

First, suppose you want to get a single implant with a crown. At a popular UK clinic, the implant, abutment, crown, and surgery can cost about £2,000, assuming you do not need additional treatments.

At Perla Dental in Antalya, Turkey, a Straumann Neodent implant and abutment cost £430, and a zirconia crown costs £175. You will likely need to visit us twice, with a six-month recovery period. Travelling from London, you will need to spend £240 on air travel for the first visit, and £360 for the second. Your stay can cost £150 and £180 during this time. Let’s also consider that you will spend about £120 on local transfers, while dining will cost about £360 over two stays. Your total price will be £2,015.

Now, let’s consider an All-on-6 treatment with a full-arch prosthesis with 12 zirconia crowns. In the UK, this treatment can cost £15,000.

Perla Dental offers All-on-6 packages with 12 zirconia crowns for £4,500. The package includes local transfers and accommodation. You will spend £600 on air travel, as before, and may spend slightly less on dining, about £250. The total treatment price in Turkey for this type of treatment totals £5,350. Replacing several teeth in Turkey is more cost-effective than restoring just one tooth.

Why Are Dental Implants Cheaper in Turkey?

Implant price differences between the UK and Turkey largely stem from broad economic factors, not differences in materials, technique, or dentist experience. Private clinics in the UK have much higher overhead costs, driven by higher property rents and utility costs. Implant materials in the UK are also more likely to pass through multiple distributors, driving up their cost.

In Turkey, clinics can often spend less on real estate and administrative expenses. International patient-facing clinics are also more likely to have in-house dental laboratories, eliminating markups on dental prosthesis manufacturing. Their higher patient volume also reduces treatment costs. Finally, UK patients also save due to favourable currency exchange rates between the pound and the lira.

Waiting Times and Treatment Duration

Waiting times for dental implants are different between Turkey and the UK. Furthermore, waiting times for NHS-provided treatments can be significantly longer than private UK options.

How Soon Can Treatment Start?

NHS-provided oral and maxillofacial surgery and restorative dentistry services both have a 31-week waiting time. The waiting time starts from the moment the service receives a referral from your GP, and ends when you have had treatment or a decision not to treat has been made for any reason.

The wait period in private dental clinics can be much shorter, and appointments may be available within days or weeks. Typically, clinics reserve 1-2 weeks for consultations and 3D scans.

Patients who want implants at Peral Dental Clinics in Turkey can send relevant dental photos, X-rays or other scans before they travel. We will then provide an initial treatment plan. When the patient arrives in Antalya, we finalise the treatment plan following an in-clinic examination. You can learn more about this process by reading how our dental implant procedure is performed step-by-step.

We can adapt your treatment schedule in Turkey to better suit your needs. You can choose any season for your treatment and plan your trip accordingly.

How Long Does Implant Treatment Take?

Private UK clinics usually follow this treatment schedule.

Treatment stageAverage Duration
Consultations, CBCT, and treatment planning1-2 weeks
Placing a single implant30-60 minutes
Implant osseointegration3-6 months
Manufacturing and placing the permanent prosthesis or crownAdditional clinic appointments over several weeks

In Turkey, the dental implant process differs slightly. The treatment is divided into two visits to Turkey. The first visit lasts 4-5 days. During this time, the clinic places implants and temporary teeth. The visit is followed by a 3-6 month healing period. The second visit is for manufacturing, adjusting, and placing the final prostheses, and lasts 6-7 days.

Implant Brands, Technology and Expertise

Dental clinics in Turkey can use the same implant brands and dental technology as UK clinics. For example, Perla Dental uses implants from Straumann Neodent, Nobel BioCare, and Astra Tech.

Straumann Neodent was founded in Brazil and later acquired by the Swiss Straumann Group. Neodent implants are used in more than 80 countries worldwide, including the UK and Turkey, and are positioned as a high-quality, yet affordable choice for most cases.

Nobel BioCare is a Swiss-American brand of implants and the original developer of the now ubiquitous All-on-4 protocol. Their implants are manufactured in the United States, Sweden, Israel, and Japan, and are used by premium dental clinics worldwide.

Astra Tech brand originated in Sweden and is now owned by a US-based Dentsply Sirona group. Their implants use a variety of innovative surface treatments and thread designs to promote osseointegration, and are available across major markets in North America, Europe, and Asia.

Technology-wise, we use 3D digital scanners and CAD-CAM systems for precise diagnostics and prosthesis manufacturing. This is similar to UK clinics with in-house dental laboratories.

When choosing a clinic in Turkey, confirm implant types and the technology it uses. Much like in the UK, dental practices can vary in how well-equipped they are.

You should also check the information about the clinic’s doctors. Find out whether the doctor is a permanent part of the dental team and what patients say about them.

At Perla Dental Clinics, implant treatments are performed under the oversight of maxillofacial surgeon Dr Onur Ademhan, who is also the clinic’s founder and CEO.

Safety, Guarantees and Aftercare

To ensure safety when getting dental treatments overseas, you should first confirm which regulatory body regulates dentistry, whether it is compulsory for dentists to be registered with them, and what standards it enforces.

In Turkey, every dentist must legally be registered with the Turkish Dental Association. It enforces professional ethics and conduct, while the Turkish Ministry of Health sets national healthcare standards and regulates international health tourism certificates. You can find more information about the Turkish Dental Association.

During the online consultation, ask the clinic as many questions as you need to understand the treatment details. You can also consult your local dentist. Some good questions to ask a clinic in Turkey include:

  • Who will be providing treatment, and what are their qualifications?
  • What are the rates of success and complications for the procedure?
  • What aftercare will you provide?
  • Who can I contact for advice after the treatment?

At Perla Dental, we provide aftercare instructions in print, including what the patient can eat during recovery and what medication to take. For aftercare support and consultations, we provide a dedicated coordinator contact.

Travel, Language and Practical Considerations

Before travelling to Turkey, clarify implant warranty conditions and which parts of your stay the clinic will cover. These services should be listed in your quote.

Clarify how any post-treatment complications are handled by the clinic. In most cases, the clinic would not be able to help you after you return to the UK directly. It may cover a return trip for specific issues, but any urgent care would need to be provided in the UK.

To simplify your stay, Perla Dental provides services of a dedicated English-speaking patient coordinator for the duration of your treatment. Our clinic and many tourist-oriented spaces have English-speaking staff, but generally not every venue can be expected to.

Implants have a lengthy recovery period, up to half a year, which you, as a UK patient, are unlikely to spend in Turkey. As such, most aftercare guidance is provided remotely. In the very rare cases that urgent dental care is required during recovery, it would need to be performed in the UK. You will be provided with general recovery advice in written form, such as dietary recommendations. You can also contact your patient coordinator for a consultation.

Another benefit of dental treatment in Turkey is time to relax between clinic visits. Both Antalya and Istanbul are popular tourist destinations, offering plenty of opportunities for seaside relaxation, shopping and exploring historical sites.

Turkey or UK: Which Should You Choose?

The choice between Turkey and the UK for implants should be made after considering your treatment goals, browsing reviews of dental implants in Turkey, and checking relevant travel advice.

When Turkey Makes Sense

  • You need to restore several teeth or prefer a full-mouth treatment.
  • You are comfortable with travelling abroad.
  • You have received your individual treatment plan and preliminary quote from the clinic.
  • You do not need in-person follow-ups.
  • You are not eligible for NHS implant service.

When Staying in the UK Makes Sense

  • You need urgent implant treatment.
  • Your case requires careful monitoring.
  • You are likely to need frequent in-person follow-up appointments.
  • You prefer not to travel abroad.
  • You are eligible for NHS implant service and find its conditions satisfactory.

FAQs About Dental Implants in Turkey vs UK

Is Turkey Worth It for One Implant?

Travelling to Turkey for a single implant is not always cost-effective if you are only interested in a dental treatment. For example, getting an implant in the UK can cost you £1,999-£2,800. Although a similar implant with crown in Turkey is cheaper on its own, about £605 at Perla Dental, you might spend about £2,000 when you add in travel, accommodation and living expenses.

Your total expenses would be comparable to those of UK implant prices, but Turkish clinics are unlikely to offer the same follow-up policy as local UK practices. It may be more cost-effective to have a single implant placed in Turkey if you are already planning a holiday or work.

Can a UK Dentist Provide Aftercare?

Under NHS terms, patients who have received non-NHS care, either in or outside the UK, are entitled to an NHS dental assessment and evaluation to stabilise their condition. However, any treatment beyond this is not guaranteed. Generally, NHS care may stabilise your condition if there are acute complications, but it won’t service or replace the implants. Your local dentist may be able to look after your implants, but you would have to pay for it yourself.

What if My Implant Fails Back in the UK?

Implant treatments have generally high survival rates: one study targeting implant-supported crowns found 3-year survival rates of 97%, while another meta-analysis concluded that four in five implants survive 20 years after placement.

If your implants fail within the warranty period, some Turkish clinics can cover your return expenses to help resolve the issue under warranty terms.
