Same-day dental implants are a procedure in which the temporary teeth can be connected to the implant posts on the day of the surgery. This means the patient gets a visible tooth replacement immediately, though patient suitability may be more demanding than for other implant treatments.
This article describes the general same-day dental implant procedure as it may be done in Turkey to help answer questions you may have about this type of treatment. Perla Dental Clinics prefers not to place the implant posts and temporary restorations on the same day. At our clinic, temporary teeth are usually fitted 2-3 days after implant surgery, as this approach is often more suitable for the patient.

What are Same Day Dental Implants?
Same-day implants are a type of implant treatment in which a temporary restoration, such as a crown or bridge, is loaded on the same day or shortly after implant surgery. They may also be called immediate load dental implants.
This does not mean that the entire treatment is completed in one day. The temporary restoration needs to be replaced with a more durable final restoration after a healing period. However, this means the patient can get some level of aesthetic restoration immediately after implant surgery.
Not all patients can have same day dental implants. To be eligible, a patient should have good oral health and healthy jawbones and gums.
What same-day can mean:
- Implant fixture placed today.
- Temporary crown or bridge loaded today.
- Final restoration at a later date, after a recovery period.
Can Dental Implants Really Be Done in One Day?
Yes, it is possible to get an implant and a temporary restoration in one day in suitable cases. Suitability can depend on available bone support, gum health, and medical history. Patient eligibility for same day implants is confirmed by an implant specialist after an in-clinic dental check-up.
Same day implants may be possible when:
- The patient has a suitable jawbone and gum health.
- Having a visible tooth replacement as fast as possible is important.
- There are no other contraindications.
Implant treatment may need some time when:
- The patient requires extensive bone grafts.
- Patient’s health history indicates a need for a more conservative approach.
- The patient does not prioritise immediate temporary restorations.
How Do Same Day Dental Implants Work?
Same day implant treatment consists of several stages:
- Assessment and planning;
- Placement of the implant and temporary restoration;
- Healing and osseointegration;
- Placement of the final restoration.
The treatment starts with a dental assessment and check-up, which confirm the patient’s suitability for same-day implants and outline the next steps of the implant procedure.
Implant placement and temporary restoration loading can be done in a single appointment or shortly after one another. These first two stages usually take at least 3 days to complete, with 4-5 days being more common for most patients.
The recovery period is necessary for healing and osseointegration, during which the implant posts fuse with the bone to create a strong support for the final crowns or bridges. This usually takes several months.
The final restorations can only be placed after a healing period. They replace the temporary teeth. How long it takes to manufacture and load the final prostheses depends on the patient’s case.
Immediate Placement, Immediate Loading and Temporary Teeth
Immediate placement and immediate loading are related concepts, but they are not the same. Immediate placement concerns the implant posts themselves. It is a type of implant surgery where the implants are placed immediately after tooth extractions. This type of procedure is used only if the patient needs some teeth to be extracted to meet the treatment goals and is eligible for it.
Immediate loading refers to when the temporary teeth are connected to the implants. Immediate load dental implant procedure has the temporary crowns or bridges loaded during the same appointment as implant surgery, or shortly afterwards.
Temporary Restoration vs Final Teeth
Same-day dental implants can support a temporary restoration immediately or shortly after placement. These temporary crowns or bridges are not as durable or precise as the final restoration. They help improve the patient’s smile aesthetics and shape the gums after implant surgery.
Temporary teeth are replaced by the final teeth once osseointegration, or fusing of the implant with the bone, is complete.
The final teeth are made from more durable and aesthetic materials, can support the patient’s biting forces, and are intended for long-term use.
Who Is Suitable for Same Day Dental Implants?
Who is eligible for same day dental implants is determined by the patient’s clinical case. Suitability for implant restorations can only be determined by a dentist after a dental check-up and necessary imaging.
The dentist will evaluate the following factors to determine patient suitability:
- Available bone support;
- Gum health and history of gum disease;
- Bite requirements;
- General medical history;
- The patient’s smoking habits;
- Bruxism;
- Restoration type.
These factors may affect patient suitability, but are not necessarily absolute. Some contraindications, such as insufficient bone volume, may be addressed with additional procedures.
Bone, Gum Health and Medical Factors
Same-day implants require sufficient bone density and dimensions, as well as good gum health for the patient to be eligible for immediate temporary restoration loading.
Other medical factors, such as smoking, bruxism, and chronic diseases, can influence patient eligibility. Having insufficient jawbone or gum health, or suffering from bruxism or chronic diseases, does not mean the patient is ineligible for dental implants. Eligibility can only be determined by the dentist based on preliminary and in-clinic examinations.
When Bone Grafting or Extraction Changes the Plan
Bone grafting may be needed for some patients and can change treatment timing. Extensive bone grafts may need to be performed separately from the implant surgery, introducing additional stages to the patient’s treatment plan.
Same Day vs Traditional Dental Implants
The most important difference between one-day dental implants and traditional implants is when the temporary restorations are connected to the implants. Same-day implants focus on providing a visible tooth replacement faster. Traditional dental implants use a more stage-by-stage approach that may involve additional treatments if necessary. Both approaches provide the patient with fully functional tooth replacements only after the implants heal.
| Key difference | Same-day implant approach | Traditional implant approach |
|---|---|---|
| Characteristics | Temporary prostheses are connected immediately or shortly after the implant surgery. | Temporary prostheses are connected to the implants at a later date, possibly after an additional surgical step to expose the implant posts. |
| When it may be considered | Patients who require a faster aesthetic restoration and have sufficient oral and general health. | Patients who require complex additional procedures are at higher risk of complications that would preclude a same-day approach. |
Benefits and Risks of Same Day Dental Implants
Same-day implants have their benefits, such as reducing the time the patient spends without teeth, but they can carry risks and require careful case selection and treatment planning.
Benefits:
- Faster temporary restoration
- Less visible gaps between teeth during recovery.
Limitations:
- Full healing takes time, like in conventional implants.
- Not suitable for every case.
What to ask the dentist:
- Are same-day implants suitable for my case?
- Can conventional dental implants be better for me if I want to minimise risks?
Recovery, Pain and Aftercare After Same Day Dental Implants
Same-day implant recovery time and aftercare vary and should be based on the dentist’s recommendations. Patients may experience some degree of soreness, swelling, or bleeding in the first days of recovery, as is common with other dental treatments.
Ask the dentist about these topics before travelling to Turkey:
- Aftercare
- Treatment follow-up plan.
- What to do if symptoms worsen.
- Temporary restoration precautions.
Following aftercare recommendations, including dietary restrictions, will help avoid possible complications. If you experience any worrying symptoms, such as excessive swelling or bleeding that does not get better, contact the clinic to address the issues.
Teeth in a Day, Full Mouth Implants and All-on-4
Teeth in a day may refer to different implant treatments in which the dental prosthesis is loaded shortly after implant surgery, including full-arch and full-mouth dental implants.
Full-mouth, All-on-4, and All-on-6 implants replace every tooth in one or both dental arches, typically by using full-arch bridges. All-on-X systems, in particular, are an established protocol used only when replacing all teeth in one or both jaws.

Same Day Dental Implants FAQs
Are Same Day Dental Implants Painful?
Implant treatments are done under local anaesthesia or alternative pain control methods. Some discomfort is expected after the implant surgery when the anaesthesia wears off. Consult the dentist about implant aftercare for your particular case to minimise pain, bleeding, and swelling during initial recovery.
How Long Do Same Day Implants Take to Heal?
Same-day implant recovery time depends on the case. Implants take several months to create a strong connection with the jawbone. This is true even for same-day implants, which can’t support a permanent restoration until the healing period is over.
Can I Have a Tooth Extracted and an Implant Placed on the Same Day?
Some patients can have immediate dental implants with extractions and implant surgery done on the same day. This is a preferred treatment path for eligible patients. However, eligibility for this procedure cannot be determined before a dental check-up.
Are Same Day Implants Permanent?
An implant fixture placed during implant surgery is intended as a long-term or permanent replacement for a missing tooth root. The temporary teeth are not permanent and are replaced with a final restoration at the end of treatment. The final crown or bridge is also intended for long-term use.
